My research examines behavioral differences in the egg sac parasitoid wasp (Philolema latrodecti) across host species within the genus Latrodetus. Specifically, I compare wasp behavior in webs of the invasive brown widow (Latrodectus geometricus), wich we hypothesize co-invade with P. latrodecti, and the native white widow (Latrodectus pallidus).
To characterize host-related behavioral differences, i conduct tent experiments (a four-choice assay including webs of both species, with and without the female spider present) and controlled filming experiments (no-choice assays using the same treatments).
In parallel, in collaboration with Oz Kira's lab, we are developing a protocol to identify and characterize volatile compounds emitted from widow egg sacs and webs, aiming to understand the chemical cues potentially guiding host selection.
